I Went On A Quest To Find The Best Burger In Newcastle

3:20 AM Unknown 0 Comments

This did, at one point, strike me as a good idea.

The first ever Battle of the Burger was held at The Tyne Bar in Newcastle this weekend.

The first ever Battle of the Burger was held at The Tyne Bar in Newcastle this weekend.

The Battle of the Burger pittied six of the city's bars and restaurants against each other in a celebration of all things beefy (and a little bit porky, too).

Michael Baister/BuzzFeed

"We expected to sell 2,500 burgers across the whole weekend," said Danny Hughes, organiser of the Battle of the Burger. "But on Friday alone we did 1,500."

"We expected to sell 2,500 burgers across the whole weekend," said Danny Hughes, organiser of the Battle of the Burger. "But on Friday alone we did 1,500."

Danny told BuzzFeed Life, "we thought it'd be great if we had a cool event where we pitch all these burgers against each other in a really friendly competition. There's going to be no losers here," he explained.

Michael Baister/BuzzFeed

The voting process was simple.

The voting process was simple.

"A token's a vote," Hughes said. Each token costs £3 and pays for your burger. "But we wanted something to separate that from being all about footfall so we've asked three judges to come in and they wield 10 votes themselves. That gives people a bit of nose room to pip it at the post."

Michael Baister/BuzzFeed

And competition was high.

And competition was high.

"They've all come at it wanting to win; they've all put some time into thinking about how they're going to do it," Hughes said.

"I was coming home from my friends place in Brooklyn late one night so there were only two other people in the subway car. This normal looking man in a suit came on and sat as close to me as physically possible and then told me to stand up and block him so he could change his outfit. I was so confused/scared but I went with it. When it was my stop he gave me a flashlight key chain and told me to be safe out in the world!"

22 Cheap Date Ideas In Dublin

4:36 AM Unknown 0 Comments

The best things couples can do in the capital for under a tenner

Take a free walking tour

Cost: free (tips appreciated)

The nice people at Sandeman's offer a three hour tour of Dublin every day that doesn't cost a penny.

You meet at City Hall at either 11am or 2pm, and off you go around the city. You'll take in Dublin Castle, Temple Bar, Christ Church and St Stephen's Green, all the while learning about the history of the city, from Vikings to 1916 to er, U2.

instagram.com

Cycle through the Phoenix Park

Cost: free

Take advantage of the stunning green enclave on the outskirts of the city by cycling along its many dedicated paths. You'll see roaming deer, take in the President's gaff at Aras An Uachtarain, and if you bring a frisbee you can have the lolz in one of the wide open spaces. If you have a tenner between you, visit The Lo-Cal Kitchen (beside the race track) for coffee and some famous Paleo Chocolate Brownies (€2.40 each)

instagram.com

Picnic along the canal

Cost: A couple of sambos

From wild swans to a tribute to Patrick Kavanagh, a ramble along the Grand Canal is an eye-opener (and great exercise). There are food markets dotted along it on Thursdays and Fridays if you have the cash to buy. Start at the Harold's Cross junction and wander all the way to the dock.

instagram.com

Stroll around Trinity College

Cost: free

A beautiful and romantic setting, take a walk around the college's grounds and take in the gorgeous buildings. Best to visit in summer when the students are off and the weather is good, so you can stretch out on the lawn outside The Pav and relax.
